Album Review:: Kings of Leon – Because of the Times

Apart from an ep, it has been three years since Kings of Leon released a new record. Their third one Because of the Times will be released on April 2. The opening track Knocked Up is seven plus minutes and a good setup for the rest of the album. There is something about a long opener that says “hey we’re back and you need to pay attention, because we have something new to say”. One thing that sets this album apart is that on a couple of tracks they make a departure from the seventies feel to the eighties with the drums and bass of My Party and the delay/reverbed out guitars of McFearless. Then there is the almost supertramped out sound of Fans with its acoustic guitars and smashing drums that is pre-mixed for classic rock radio deep cuts. The record is very good and it may be their best record yet. Fact is that Kings of Leon have been underappreciated in America since they came out. Europeans give these guys the respect they deserve – just look at all the sold out dates for their upcoming european tour compared to the american ones.
