Live Review:: Jesus And Mary Chain in NYC 5.21.07

New York City eh? Well I arrived back from NYC last night after checking out The Jesus And Mary Chain live for the first time since their 1998 performance at the 9:30 Club in DC. I was in town for the Monday May 21st show at Webster Hall. So how did they do? Well, for a band three shows into their reunion tour and the first in about a month – I think they did rather well. And for those reports via various blogs, newswires, and even the Village Voice – I’m starting to think the writers may have never seen the band live before – I mean writing about how the band just stand there and look uninterested? hmmm…that sounds like the Mary Chain everytime I’ve seen them – and that’s going all the way back to the late ’80’s. It’s always been about their amazing music. The band line-up this time out: Jim and William Reid (of Course), Phil King (bass), Loz Colbert (Drums), and Mark Crozer (Guitar)

The set kicked off with “Never Understand” (much like the two previous shows) – followed by “Head On” (which Jim seemed to miss the timing of near the end). It’s always interesting to see bands make mistakes and even a couple of false starts – just to show they’re human. The highlights of the evening have to go to “Some Candy Talking” (a tight live version – pure magic, ace lighting!), A rocking “Reverence”, the menacing “Cracking Up (again sung by Jim), William Reid’s guitar work on “Blues From A Gun”, and “a sweet “Just Like Honey” (featuring the Comas lead singer). I’ve already heard their 2nd performance on the 22nd was great with “Catchfire” and “You Trip Me Up” added to the set list. For those in Europe, get ready for the Mary Chain, they’re just warming up…
