Album Notes::Miracle Fortress – Five Roses

I’ve been listening to Miracle Fortress lately. In terms of Brian Wilsonesque pop with an Eno bluster, I think Graham Van Pelt does a pretty good job of making an enjoyable record. In fact, from the beginning this record hits the mark with some good melodies, and a voice that sounds like Beach Boys. The multi-tracked vocals give these well thought out songs a symphonic character and the music swirls in and out of worlds, sometimes in very cinematic manner. Some of the songs are better than others on this record, but Next Train is my favorite song with all its’ finger snapping and the way that change comes and gives the song momentum.

Here are notes from the Miracle Fortress press release:
Miracle Fortress is the brainchild of Graham Van Pelt, a Montreal-based multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who in this incarnation builds wall of sound pop songs in the tradition of Brian Wilson and Brian Eno. Originally from Stratford, Ontario, Graham is also a member of Montreal’s Think About Life (Alien8 Recordings). He began to record as Miracle Fortress after co-founding the multi-functional art space/venue/studio space Friendship Cove with local artist Jack Dylan in Montreal’s Griffintown in late 2005…

I’ve added Maybe Lately & This Thing About You to the player
