Album Review::Liars:Liars

I’ve been really enjoying this new Liars record entitled Liars, coming out August 28th on Mute records. The album is their 4th full length, but this time things are a bit different. The usual elongated abstractions have been factored down, but this is still the Liars you know, …alien rock. Evidently some eighties bands like The Cure, OMD, and Siouxsie And The Banshees were influences for this record. The opening track Plaster Casts of Everything works off a single riff and just builds in intensity in a drone like fashion. Maybe it is just the drums and the repetitive minimalism, but Houseclouds is somewhat Can-ish. Leather Prowler is like psychocandyish, but inside a house of mirrors, with lots of revolving echo and delay, and maybe mix in a little Suicide. What would They know is also very Suicide/Psychocandy like, and it even comes adorned with a great space thriller riff. Anyway, I could go on, but who needs it. I hope you get the picture and don’t forget to catch Liars on tour with Interpol, who also have another good record out.
