Tour News:: Crowded House Live At The Beacon Theater, New York, NY 08.08.07

It’s been well over a decade since I’ve had the pleasure to see Crowded House live – 1994 to be exact on the band’s “Together Alone” tour which was maybe two or three shows before original drummer Paul Hester quit the band. Well that show was a very memorable one – and the current line-up looks to be quite a fun showing as well – from their earlier performances this year – “Live Earth” and the infamous “Coachella” show – it looks as if the band is already in gear.

On Wednesday August 8th they played The Beacon Theater for the first of two shows. From the beginning the band mixed the old with the new. The set began with one of their harder guitar driven songs “Locked Out” – following it with the classic “World Where You Live”. Material from the latest LP “Time On Earth” (“Heaven That I’m Making”, “Walked Her Way Down”, “Don’t Stop Now”, “Silent House”, “She Called Up”, and “Pour Le Monde”) dominated a good portion of the set and mixing the mood and pacing of the overall set. It was a nice suprise to hear “Love You ‘Til The Day I Die” from Crowded House’s 1986 debut. Neil Finn’s songs have always had a bit of a anthemic/sing along quality to them – and tonights show was no exception – Finn led a wonderful sing along on the hypnotic “Fall At Your Fee” – you could hear the entire theater singing in unison. Another great suprise of the evening was “Italian Plastic” – a moving tribute to the late Paul Hester. The interference of security on the band’s biggest song – “Don’t Dream It’s Over” nearly ruined what most people came to see – but Finn made it a point to include the current incident in the words of the song, even going into the crowd and stopping the song near the end. In the past, Crowded House shows have always made a point to add snippets of other cool songs during an instrumental break or at the close of a song – “Pineapple Head” added The famous 1971 Cocoa Cola Ad song “I’d Like to Buy The World a Coke”
The band ended the evening with two crowd pleasing encores. “Weather With You” once again had the audience in good voice with a cool sing along – while “Something So Strong”, the band’s other big hit in the US popped and rocked with it’s ever so catchy melody. The second encore featured two fan favorites – the classic “Mean To Me” and “Better Be Home Soon” -a fitting close to a fine evening of two plus hours of music. Although this performance missed some of Paul Hester’s antics – Neil and Nick Seymour more than held their own bringing back some of the old Crowded House live magic and adding new one’s with the current line-up.
