album review::The Hottest State

The Hottest State is a film by Ethan Hawke and the soundtrack is made up of songs written by Jesse Harris and performed by Willie Nelson, Cat Power, Bright Eyes, Norah Jones, Feist, The Black Keys, Rocha, M. Ward, Tony Scherr, Brad Mehldau and Emmylou Harris. Jesse’s songs are taken and converted in such ways that they sound like the perfomers were the writers as well, because the songs are so personal. Willie Nelson gives “Always Seem to Get Things Wrong” the texarkana treatment, making it his own. “Big Old House” is performed by Bright Eyes and is based around the drums and synthesizer. The Black Keys give “If You Ever Slip” the heavy blues rock treatment, while Norah Jones lends her sweet melancholy to “World of Trouble”. Brad Mehldau performs the piano piece “Never See You” with a flare that is reminscent of Vince Guaraldi. Jesse Harris also performs on the soundtrack, adding three songs – “It Will Stay With Me,” “One Day The Dam Will Break,” and “Dear Dorothy”. In the end, The Hottest State is one of the best soundtracks i’ve heard in a long time, and if you like the artists on the album you are almost guaranteed to want to hear this one.
