album review::Travis Morrison Hellfighters:All Y’All

Travis Morrison Hellfighters’ All Y’All came out last week on Barsuk Records. Morrison was formerly in The Dismemberment Plan and he wrote the record in D.C., in early 2005 and recorded it in Chicago in 2006. Opener I’m Not Supposed To Like You (but) is an up-tempo jazzy lounge song which comes complete with some acrobatic phrasing. The record then makes a full 180 with As We Proceed which trades the jazz for a rock feel, and includes a well suited outro. The more sullen East Side Of The River is reminiscent of the band Karate with its near-spoken word and its reliance on the drums and bass. You Just Didn’t Turn Me On starts off with the feel of a nightclub number with its’ jazz keys only to quickly morph into a more straight forward pop song. All Y’All is one of the more entertaining records I’ve heard this year with its part jazz/ part pop rock, self-deprecating lyrics, fun melodies, lots of unforeseen changes, and overall sound of the recording.
