notes::Joe Henry, Civilians, and Jay Leno

In advance of his second Anti- disc Civilians, singer, songwriter, guitarist and acclaimed producer Joe Henry will perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Friday, September 7th, 2007. The appearance supports the album’s September 11th release.

Already drawing some of the strongest praise of his ten album tenure, Performing Songwriter heralds the new disc as “Elegant, understated and sparsely rendered, the songs often bring to mind Tom Waits in their sense of inhabiting multiple genres at once.” Elsewhere, in its four-star review.Paste called Civilians “excellent” and writes, “There might be someone else playing music in the vein of Joe Henry’s intoxicating folk-noir, but it’s hard to imagine anyone doing it better.” The twelve song set was recorded and mixed in his home studio and counts the talents of guest pianist Van Dyke Parks on the brilliantly poignant “Civil War” and the emotive, lilting “I Will Write My Book.” Longtime accomplices Bill Frisell, Patrick Warren and Greg Leisz also lend their talents to Henry’s personally and politically informed new album.
