album review::Thurston Moore:Trees Outside The Academy

Last month, Thurston Moore released Trees Outside The Academy on Ecstatic Peace! The album is his first solo endeavor since 1995’s Psychic Hearts. The music is a stripped down affair recorded at J. Mascis’ home studio with Steve Shelly on drums, Samara Lubelski on violin, and Thurston handling the bass and acoustic guitars. Don’t let the inadequacies of Psychic Hearts cloud your judgement. Trees Outside The Academy is a much more cohesive effort, which incorporates some interesting guitar structures with an air of laid back suspense. You’ll likely be able to pull out this one years down the line and remember “Let love take over, the devil just ain’t that smart.”
