album review::Gravenhurst:The Western Lands

Bristol’s Gravenhurst released a record in early September, which I really like called The Western Lands. Gravenhurst create a slightly gloomy atmosphere with music that seems patented for cold grey days that shut you inside and force self examination. The album reads more as a whole than it does in terms of singles, although there are standouts. The soft spoken vocals and music flow from relatively lighter more upbeat moments like the driving “Hollow Men,” which fades into a haze of feedback, to the more somber acoustic driven “Song Among The Pine.” For fans of good tunes, rainy days, and Pale Saints, this one should surely fit in there somewhere.
