album review::Ryan Adams & The Cardinals: Follow The Lights

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals have a new seven song ep Follow The Lights out on Lost Highway. I guess since we’re talking about Ryan Adams I have to make the obligatory “Ryan is so prolific and what do you know, he has another release…” So there it is i’ve said it like all the others, and it doesn’t need to be repeated again. The title track “Follow The Lights” is a nice mid-tempo heartfelt number that has some nice subtle melodies and strong phrasing. “Blue Hotel” is a song I believe is from the Easy Tiger sessions, which has a nice building chorus of “go on and rain down on us.” The country tinged soul remake of Alice In Chains classic “Down In A Hole” is a slow burner that penetrates, and comes off with the power of the original, only with a Ryan Adams’ complexion. Borrowing “This Is It” from his Rock n Roll album, Ryan & The Cardinals give the song a redo that brings out the strengths of a great song that got buried on a crucified record. The ep closes with two live studio versions of the acoustic “If I Am A Stranger” and a Norah Jones-less “Dear John” which gives the Easy Tiger version a good run for the money. In finale, this is an ep that is bound to have some favorites on it, and if you’re a Ryan Adams fan, you will be pleased.
