album review::Johnathan Rice:Further North

More and more, Johnathan Rice’s Further North attracts my attention. It seems that over time, the record has gone from being alright, to raising my attention span, so I have to concede Further North is a strong record stocked with catchy songs, tales of losing love, and the occasional L.A. allusion. Straight forward tunes, packed with strong melodies, faint hints of banjo, and even sitar sounds, such as on Johnathan’s trash rocker “THC,” which is as far out as Johnathan gets on Further North, but that is alright. This isn’t passive folk pop, Johnathan rocks out from time to time, like on the short, but concise “Giving It Up.” Still, most of the tracks are based around the acoustic guitar and a rhythm section, prospering his songs. I even hear a little Byrds guitar on the stellar sixties revelator “What Am I Going To Do?” Johnathan was on World Cafe a couple of weeks ago, and the link is below, along with some live video.
