The Grand Archives

After co-writing the much applauded Band of Horses debut, Mat Brooke left the band and opened the Redwood Bar, and many wondered if his musical talents would ever seen again. Now Brooke has an album out under the moniker Grand Archives on Sub Pop, that certainly shows his master stroke at the helm of the pop tune. Grand Archives is a serious pop record, that while delivering on plenty of sun, stays fairly upbeat and never sounds dribbly, flimsy, or sappy. After listening to this record many times over, and while the comparison may not even be that relevant, this album reads with an interest and continuity that far exceeds the second Band of Horses record. Within this musical journey, Mat Brooke’s vocals, and even sometimes the tone of the songs, tend to remind me of Neal Halstead and Mojave 3, especially on the shimmering slow scorcher, “Swan Matches,” complete with beautiful harmonies by Jenn Ghetto. I shouldn’t mislead you with that prior statement about Mojave 3, because once you arrive at my favorite track, “George Kamnski,” you’ll probably think of Eric Matthews with those serene vocals and the overall ebb and tide of the song. Seriously though, Grand Archives have released simply one of the best “pop” records I’ve heard in a while, and trust me when I tell you that I think “pop” is a bad word as well. Don’t let that dissuade you, relish in the sound and vision of Grand Archives by checking out “Torn Blue Foam Couch,” and the video for “Sleepdriving,” which I assure you is unofficial.
