The Botticellis:: Old Home Movies

California … you used to seem so exotic while growing up in a remote area on the southern Virginia coast. You are the place where most of my favorite music was made between, say 1966 and 1976, much of which found birth in the canyon until Manson signified the end of all that. Not to mention, The Beach Boys and the canonized Brian Wilson, whose ideas at this point have been worked and exploited as much as incapable hands have been capable; still, no one has even touched the magnificence of what might be the greatest pop single of all time, “Good Vibrations,” or my favorite – “God Only Knows.” All that and I still haven’t gotten to scenes of Gidget, cool ass vans with fabulous murals, beach blanket tanned beauties, wild summer frolic, and that glorious California surf. The Botticellis’ Old Home Movies feels like all those memories in full sepia toned frame, strolling down an avenue of classic surf guitar rhythms, wonderful old organs and so much more; holding ground for some exceptionally picturesque songs full of capturing melodies. Indeed, the title Old Home Movies is appropriate, as the album unfolds like a scrapbook, bringing joy and equal melancholy as the events belong to the past, but the photos do much to bring the feelings to the present. Experience the sweetness and light of the acoustic music box piece, “Tongue is Blue,” coming off like a featherweighted carousel soundtrack. It even feels a little like prom night on the Motownesque intro to “Who are You Now,” which follows into an AM Gold chorus, reminiscent of Joey Scarbury’s hit single, “Believe it Or Not.” I could also mention the “Blackbird” like softness of the finale, “Table by the Window,” or those lovely crescendos on the opening title track. It is all over too quickly on Old Home Movies, but surely this one will accompany me on my move out to L.A., later this year. Old Home Movies comes out May 13th on Antenna Farm Records.
