DeVotchKa:: A Mad & Faithful Telling

Like so many others, I have been touched by DeVotchKa’s A Mad & Faithful Telling, released last month on Anti. Musically diverse to say the least, few records I’ve heard this decade succeed in transporting me to such an unique headspace. A Mad & Faithful Telling is a charmingly odd cross pollination of flamenco/ska/spaghetti western and more, worked rather naturally into DeVotchKa’s vibrant gypsy spirituals that both pay tribute to the Old World, and welcome in the New. Romantic and captivating forces occupy these realms, reaching maddening heights with unfettered release on pieces like “The Clockwise Witness,” or pausing for some not-so-quiet reflection on “Along The Way.” This is not world music; this is colorful, passionate, and anything besides boring.
