Thrice:: The Alchemy Index: Vol. III & IV: Air & Water

Thrice are a band that have been fearless in following departing creative tangents. On the second installment of the Alchemy Index, Vol. III & IV: Air & Earth, III is romantic rock prone to explosion and mutation. There is an emotional content that swells heavy then abruptly dissipates on “Broken Lungs,” morphing into a floating passage holding back the impending deluge. “The Sky Is Falling” is lit by horns, synth sounds, talk of clouds, and it all coming down. “A Song For Milly Michaelson,” is the flagship track on III & IV, a slow melting succulent piece, full of tension and containing a section that is downright beautiful; all done with music that really conveys the exasperation of the song’s main character, …whomever that may be. IV is much more acoustic, and by acoustic there is everything from delightful banjos on the slow burning, “The Earth Isn’t Humming,” to solitary acoustic guitar and late night existentialism on “Moving Mountains.” In addition, the piano takes lead for a while on night time ballad “Digging My Own Grave,” coming with luscious arrangements, following suit on “The Lion And The Wolf,” a piece that evokes thoughts of Sting and “Englishmen in New York,” only with gothic overtones. Throughout Vol. III & IV, Thrice show off skilled musicianship while managing to be versatile songwriters that haven’t forgotten melody is essential; otherwise, it is all whip cream.
