Verve// Remixed 4

I’ve really been enjoying Verve//Remixed 4, an amalgam of the past and present featuring an array of latin, soul, jazz, soul, and r & b standards done over with some of the beat world’s finest alchemists. A nice early evening record that takes some old familiars and sees them re-imagined with taste, and in such a seamless manner that sometimes even the experienced listener will have to think about where the old left off and where the new began. I love the subversive freak of “California Soul,” with DJ Diplo working some real good magic; though, overall I can’t decide if my favorite is the Antibalas remix of “Dilo Como Yo,” and it’s spacey tribalism, or the aquarium feel of Karriem Riggins remix of Willie Bobo’s “Evil Ways,” which even offers a hint of vertigo. Below you can check out the Diplo remix of “California Soul,” featuring Marlena Shaw, the first female vocalist signed to Blue Note Records, shown here really getting to business.
