Alejandro Escovedo:: Real Animal

With the release of his ninth album, Real Animal, produced by Tony Visconti (T Rex, David Bowie, Thin Lizzy) and out on June 24th, Alejandro Escovedo has laid out thirteen songs of diverse vision and emotion. On opener, “Always a Friend,” Alejandro assures us that he still has the spice of life and the melodies to get us through another album with a smile and the need to hit repeat. From the calling looks of calmer psychic shores like the caressing “Swallows of San Juan,” and closer “Slow Down,” to the crunchy rock of “Chip N’ Tony,” fans and new friends should both delight. For those with geographical ties, Real Animal takes those in to account with stomper “Chelsea Hotel,” coming across like Jim Caroll with spy thriller accents and a fierce vocal bellowing; while “Hollywood Hills,” slows things down to harbor Alejandro’s textured croon in a way more Richard Hawley than classic bar rock. Overall, Real Animal feels and sounds good, so do as you like and check him out on tour this summer, including some shows with DMB.

Alejandro Escovedo has been writing music and performing for over 30 years. His career started in The Nuns, a San Francisco punk band that opened the last original Sex Pistols show at the Winterland in 1978. He was a founding member of cow-punks Rank And File and has released several critically acclaimed solo albums over the last fifteen years.
