Albert Hammond, Jr.: ¿Como Te Llama?

Out this week is ¿Cómo Te Llama?, the followup to Albert Hammond Jr.’s 2007 Yours To Keep, recorded over 5 weeks at Electric Lady Studios and produced by Albert along with engineer Gus Oberg and drummer Romano. From this listener’s ear, Yours To Keep was alright, but nowhere near the dynamic record of these thirteen new episodes. After repeated listens, ¿Como Te Llama? comes clearly in to focus as a record that needed to be made, and in the process shows the artist himself has some great listening tastes. Albert and his buddies, Matt Romano, Marc Philippe Eskenazi and Josh Lattanzi, have crafted a vibrant multi-faceted listen that not only heats up in intensity, but contains colorfully inventive guitar fill like one would expect; while not being afraid to get Dinah Shore, calgon, and dreamy on instrumental “Spooky,” which even itself comes off as well thought out and not there to merely take up space like so many pieces without words. That all sets the stage for the bass to open heavy in “Watching The Detectives” gala style on the static guitar dub of “Borrowed,” containing intermittent distorted drudges slicing through a tattered and torn atmosphere eventually breaking free with release. Once again, a lot of diverse ideas and a determination to avoid the norm while maintaining strong melodies pervades ¿Cómo Te Llama?, whether that be the spaced out beats and trickling bass of “Lisa”; calls of – – I miss you already – on “In My Room”; the snare march of “Rocket”; or the crunchy guitars and wonderfully hazy lull on my favorite track, “The Boss Americana,” with its resounding epiphany – “I’m not beneath the wind.” None of us are Albert, none of us.
