Centro-Matic/South San Gabriel:: Dual Hawks

After having seen Centro-Matic a number of times throughout the decade, including several stints with Drive By Truckers, I’m usually glad to get a new release from Will Johnson and his interchangeable outfits: Centro-Matic & South San Gabriel. Not to mention, Centro-Matic’s 2006 masterwork Fort Recovery, still appears in my heavy rotation from time to time. Here we have Dual Hawks, an expansive two record set presented as Centro-matic and South San Gabriel’s 13th and 14th records. The South San Gabriel side and its twelve songs come off quiet, reserved, and on par. However, expecting a little more action from Centro-Matic, this disc runs with Will Johnson talking about Will Johnson things like “butane” and such; and while never awful, fans will aimlessly search for a new “Triggers and Trash Heaps,” “Calling Thermatico,” or “Mighty Midshipman.” Below you can check out “Patience For The Ride,” and “Triggers and Trash Heaps,” from the vastly superior Centro-Matic album Fort Recovery.
