The Donkeys:: Living On The Other Side

The Donkeys sophomore album, Living On The Other Side, comes out today via Dead Oceans. The album is a trip right out of late sixties/early seventies southern California by way of the beach, the canyon, and the PCH. The mood sets in with an equal sonic varnish implying the influence of hanging out, smoking, drinking, and other elixirs that promote 4th dimensional philosophical discourse. Living On The Other Side is fun, finely constructed, and carries well to the end, while not at all coming across as a redo of the past, rather a continuation of a pre-existing vibe that still has much life to breath. Opening with talk of leaving on “Gone Gone Gone,” the album shows imagination through a variety of classic feels, including the Neil Youngish “Dolphin Center,” and the groovy late night come down of “Traverse Wine,” with its’ smokey organ flow. The infection intensifies on the sing-along earthy atmosphere of the twangy “Bye Bye Bye,” while reaching a fever pitch on “Downtown Jenny,” which evokes thoughts of Jerry Garcia’s wonderful fragile vocals and the Dead tune “Deal.” The surf is up on the breezy “Nice Train,” with talk of hipster bars and drinking, though the eastern strain of the Byrds dominates “Dreamin’.” “Boot On The Seat” sees the return of the J. Garcia vocals, good harmonies, the pedal steel, and a nice harmonica. Living On The Other Side closes with the heavier “Excelsior,” falling somewhere in the midst of later long hair era Byrds and Gran Funk Railroad’s “I’m Your Captain.” Good show.
