Ray LaMontagne:: Gossip In The Grain

I haven’t written about Ray LaMontagne’s new album, Gossip In The Grain, since way before its release a couple of weeks ago. Let that be no symptom of disease, for Gossip In The Grain served me well for many nights; and while that love is gone, this album stands easily as Ray’s best record. In the past, I’ve always been a fan of much of his music, (not to mention his voice), but at the same time, the previous records always felt spotty. Gossip In The Grain ups the ante with a collection of pieces that range in colored emotion, setting the mood with the spirited soul of opener “You Are The Best Thing”; veering into the exasperation of “Let It Be Me,” done with quiet embrace; following with “Sarah,” complete with string arrangements and an overall tone making it feel like it belongs on Nick Drake’s Bryter Layter. This is just the beginning, with the fruits better off found by the listener. Gossip In The Grain is Ray LaMontagne’s most cohesive effort to date.
