A.C. Newman crowns Get Guilty

There is something of substance to grasp in a week where mass hysteria and herd mentality have run rampant with the coronation of the King. While we should all hope for the best, greatness can only be certified after you’ve done something great. Right? Here on planet earth, what they tell us is going on rarely corresponds with what we actually experience. A.C. Newman, leader of the New Pornographers, has something quite worthwhile for this inaugural season in the form of new album, Get Guilty (Matador). This record is easily my favorite release from any New Pornographers’ derivative. The album is chalked full of everything you need. It’s a very active and entertaining listen that will have you in a fit trying to read a book while its playing. Rest assured, you won’t have to sit there and try to figure out if and why you like this record; Get Guilty does what it is supposed to do, and if you’re susceptible at all you will feel the psychic storm of skyscraper moments. Commencing with the grand gesture of “There Are Maybe Ten or Twelve,” this opening procession sets the stage for a work lit high and bright by strong instrumentation and songwriting with excellent use of repetition and harmony to bring the point to the forefront. Get Guilty has an immediacy throughout which sets the bar high early on in the year. There is something regal and courtly in the air, and I can’t help to break a smile every time I hear that immaculate shaker. It’s the devil you know that will slam the door harder. Make of that what you will.
