William Elliott Whitmore:: Animals In The Dark

Animals In The Dark is the new album by William Elliott Whitmore, out tomorrow on Anti. Using his trademark dark blues to inject Animals In The Dark, Whitmore stands with the usual discontentment. This time out W.E.W. elects to rail against politicians, Johnny law, the rich man, and the overall poor state of things, rather than detailing the Iowa landscape and life that we’ve become accustomed. First released track “Old Devils,” shows the typical suspects at it again with their double talk, deceit, and subterfuge, while “Johnny Law,” asks how worthy the annoying man is without his badge, gun, and uniform. With all that considered, William Elliott Whitmore’s expression succeeds best on the stirring gospel of the album’s defining track, “Who Stole The Soul?” Throughout the record there are spots where one will surely feel as if they’ve stepped inside the church of psychic defeat. No doubt, Whitmore’s spirit still remains in tact during these times when folks have all but lost it and are willing to grab hold to any hope they can. Very fine listen indeed, though I wouldn’t get too excited about positive change. How many of those fancy banker men in the news have been arrested for the tons of money they stole?
