Fol Chen:: Part 1: John Shade, Your Fortune’s Made

Today, Highland Park, California’s Fol Chen release their debut album, Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune’s Made, on Asthmatic Kitty. Easily one of my most played records this year, Part I: John Shade Your Fortune’s Made, is very danceable at times while equally dark and freaky at other points. That description could imply a big mess, but what Fol Chen have created is something enjoyable and worthy of attention. The album opens with the slow drip of “The Believers,” expanding with horn and pluck in to full fledged carnivaleque trauma. “No Wedding Cake,” sees synth, bass, and vocals convulse in frenetic orchestration while disco electro guitar injection makes hip shaking unavoidable. The willowy sway of “You and Your Sister in Jericho,” unravels to a toxic and ominous tone before turning downright tense and apocalyptic. One of my favorites is the soul filled beat heavy number, “The Idiot,” coming with a mandate to dance, while pondering love and the divided worlds we live in despite our close proximity. In short, Part 1: John Shade, Your Fortune’s Made is strong, insightful, and fun throughout, though it would be a crime to depart without mentioning the pulse, pop and pause of “Cable TV,” citing Janet Jackson’s “When I Think Of You,” and no uncertain call to the waxed floor.
