Angus and Julia Stone:: A Book Like This

Aussie brother/sister duo Angus and Julia Stone release their North American debut, A Book Like This, today via Nettwerk. The label itself seems to have a monopoly on many of the brightest male/female duos (Submarines, Weepies…), and Angus and Julia do much to cement the fact. There is a certain profound chemistry between the duo that works magically on A Book Like This, with Angus and Julia both showing strong songcraft with a rare purity. His voice is warm and thick with an enlighted solemnity, while his songs take a more big picture philosophical perspective. Her songs are much more personal, done with vocals that are stark, rushing, and ravenlike. Difficult to pick out a favorite as there is so much to enjoy here, though Julia’s mental decompression on “Wasted,” lets it all out in a way that is hard not to feel affected. Then, there is the migratory burlesque of “Private Lawns,” and the beachy caress of “The Beast,” carrying an effervescent chorus evoking thoughts of early AM seventies giants like Firefall and America. Elsewhere, there is the evening request of “Bella,” lit by finely picked warm acoustic, harmonizing “oohs,” and perfectly placed shaker. “Paper Aeroplane” continues the fine procession with its muted click and clack rhythm, while the acoustic music box proclamation of “Hollywood,” may be the greatest strength of A Book Like This, with its melodic draw and talk of Johnny and June. Yet another golden moment occurs on “Just A Boy,” where the potential of feeling is pondered over stirring music topped off by nice harmonica. Watch the videos below and see them live.
