Roger O’Donnell takes out Machetes

Roger O’Donnell, best known for his 20 year career as keyboard player with The Cure, has entered the world of artist management. The idea of managing a band never crossed his mind until he was blown away by a band called Machetes in Toronto, Canada. Formed in 2007, the four piece is a glam/punk/rock all-girl band with influences ranging from the Stooges to David Bowie and the Stones to the Clash. “Talking to them after we first met, I found them to be passionate about life and in love with music,” explains O’Donnell. They don’t care about success or fame; they just want to play, and in doing so remind a lot of people why they started playing in the first place. “The idea of an artist managing a band really intrigued O’Donnell. Having been there and through it all himself, who could be better suited to advise and encourage? O’Donnell plans to take Machetes to London in June for a month of shows, and to record a full-length album for release in the fall. Adds O’Donnell, “I think ‘manage’ is probably the wrong word to use for our relationship. I’m just here to try and steer this thing in the right direction. We have a great understanding, a real affinity on a lot of levels, which makes the whole process that much more enjoyable and easy.” After 30 years in this business of being mismanaged I think I know as much as anyone,” says O’Donnell. In addition to the new management endeavor, O’Donnell just released his second solo album, Songs From The Silver Box, and has his own digital label, 99 Times out of 10.
