Obits:: I Blame You

Fans of Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes should delight in Brooklyn based Obits and their new debut album, I Blame You. Featuring Rick Froberg of the aforementioned acts, whose coarse vocals guide I Blame You, the album was recorded at Seaside Lounge in Brooklyn. Having said all that, by now you know if this is your thing or not. This album is as good as you anticipate it might be, if not better. Here is a jack-the-ripper slasher record where the guitars sound like police & ambulance sirens scouring the dark and blood laced city night; with a tone of mangled and mutated surf and other classic injection filling out the jagged backdrop. “Widow of My Dreams” opens the album with a claustrophobic classic era Batman chase resulting in all sorts of glorious rumble. “Two-Headed Coin” features a backstreet face-off propelled by the rhythm section and intermittent guitar surges, all the time bringing to mind ‘hand jive.’ Without a wasted space on the album this work is as efficient as it is engaging, and perfect — to drive to, fuck to it, dance to it, …anything save go to sleep. These twelve tunes are probably the best forty minutes on disc I’ve heard all year.
