Amadou & Mariam:: Welcome to Mali

Colorful melodies, a spirited flow, and other exotica punctuate the new album, Welcome to Mali, from Amadou & Mariam. Welcome to Mali comes across like an inspired conversation unwinding as a delightful offering for the listener. The album opens with the Damon Albarn produced track, “Sabali,” initially coming through with the sonic quality of an antique phonograph with horn, before assimilating into the modern age. “Africa” stands as my favorite track with its sparkling vocal exchanges, overall movement, and lines such as – ‘I want to travel every inch of your curls.’ Singer Mariam Doumbia and her husband, guitarist/vocalist Amadou Bagayoko met and fell in love at the Institute for Young Blind People in Bamako, Mali’s capital, three decades ago.
