The French Semester on Good Friends Only I Could See

I often hold an affinity for current Los Angeles bands that hearken back to the golden musical age of their own city, rather than obsess on quirky innovation. While the name – The French Semester, immediately conjures up certain inviting images of the past, what holds more weight is the music. These ten tracks sound like an unearthed sixties’ summer gem, with full on lo-fi warmth, nostalgic reverb, glazed harmonies, and the songs to pull it off. Lots of fun here, opener “Backwards Rolling,” has the rawness and mood of a 1965 Boyce & Heart pre-Monkees demo. Take a pass on the current age for a while. There is much to remember.
