When You’re Strange:: A Film about The Doors

Writer-director Tom DiCillo’s film is said to uncover previously unseen footage from the group, with narration by Johnny Depp. The film chronicles the making of The Doors’ six landmark studio albums in just five years, as well as their live performances. Rare footage offers an intimate glimpse into their musical collaboration – and their offstage lives.

I’ve seen one poor Doors movie that came out in the early nineties directed by Oliver Stone, an awful interpreter of history. Moreover, I’ve watched as many music films as one obsessive can take in during a relative short lifetime. I also thought the much raved about Johnny Cash movie came up short, as did my Cash enthusiast friends.  I have higher hopes for When You’re Strange.  Let’s see if it performs. The film is being screened in a limited engagement in several markets around the country and on May 26, the film will be aired on PBS as part of its American Masters series. When You’re Strange will be released on DVD soon after.
