Good news with the announcement that The English Beat catalog will be reissued. Beginning on July 10th, a new compilation titled Keep The Beat: The Very Best Of The English Beat will be released. Even better, there will be a new box set titled The English Beat: The Complete Beat. The 5-CD Complete Beat box set features all 3 studio albums with bonus tracks, all remastered from the original tapes; 2 discs of bonus material, including three sessions recorded with John Peel for his show on BBC Radio 1, tracks from a live show recorded at Boston’s Opera House, and 12” and dub versions of some of the band’s singles. Fans buying the box set on Shout! Factory’s website will also receive the first ever release of The English Beat: Live At The US Festival, part of Shout! Factory’s new line of US Festival releases.

Good news with Beachwood Sparks’ first new album in eleven years, The Tarnished Gold, coming out in June. The album features singer/guitarist Chris Gunst, singer/bassist Rademaker, singer/multi-instrumentalist Farmer Dave Scher, and singer/drummer Aaron Sperske, with support from guitarist Ben Knight (The Tyde). Thom Monahan also returned to the controls.
Howth’s upcoming album is titled Newkirk and it comes out May 1st via the Mecca Lecca Recording Co. Without going off the deep end of adjectives and empty descriptions, I will say it has solid writing and enough of this and that to keep my interest. Best of all you can make up your own mind with the music below.
Brooklyn-based label Famous Class has released the first volume of their LAMC split 7″ series today. For each LAMC split 7” Famous Class asked one of their favorite bands to provide them with an unreleased track for the A-side. They were then asked to pick their favorite emerging artist to provide a track for the B-side. On the first 7″ in the series, A Place to Bury Strangers selected Ceremony and you can preview the tracks and purchase below.
Back in FebruaryKevn Kinney & The Golden Palominos released a good country mile. The album marks Kinney’s first solo work since 2004′s Sun Tangled Angel Revival and the first time Anton Fier has lent out the Golden Palominos name since 1996′s Dead Inside.
A good country mile opens with an altered take on Jason Isbell’s “Never Gonna Change”, incorporating a slower draw and burn than the original done up over resonating strings and the howl of harmonica. Down the line comes the raucous back and forth of “Got to Move on (Again)”, the more balladesque “Challenge”, and “Wild Dog Moon Pt. 2″, which evokes the phrasing and musical gesturing of Neil Young. With that all in mind, undoubtedly, the finest and longest piece on this album is the reflective and bit more country title track. Overall, a good country mile invites with its southern wrappings, warm recording, and song selections. There’s also a very nice revisit upon Seven Mary Three’s “Southwestern State” for the closer, marking the album’s second best effort.
London’s Radials offer a listen to “Ships In The Night“ for your Friday inspection. Four digital singles will be released each week starting April 10 via Minty Fresh.
