Adding to this season’s draw are The Safes and their five song EP Sight Of All Light. Over perhaps too quickly, or maybe just the perfect dose of high energy rock-n-roll with equalled melody, to make you forget about your probably boring life (a mandate in some parts of the world) for a while? Chicago’s The Safes are brothers Frankie, Michael and Patrick O’Malley. If you like the track below then you will be well suited for take off.

Out this week in the states is an album which has already gained wide acclaim abroad – XX Teens debut album, Welcome To Goon Island. This eleven track punk inspired rhythm crashing exposition is one of the most colorful freak fests I’ve heard in a while. Welcome To Goon Island is a diverse work occupied by guitar scrapes, slides, and splashes over tunes that roll and sometimes beg you to dance. XX Teens will have you moving with numbers that range from the bizarro horror cabaret of “Darlin’”; the vaudevillian slope of “Ba (Ba-Ba-Ba)”; to the ecstatic release of favorite “Sun Comes Up.” Mysterious, political, and haunted, with some spy thriller thrown in as well, Welcome To Goon Island is full of wild twists, appropriately ending with a bit from peace activist Brian Haw.

King Tuff is singer/guitarist Kyle Thomas of the acclaimed Witch. King Tuff’s record Was Dead is a tossing of early rock-n-roll, sixties garage psychedelia, buzzing thin surf fuzz fills, and a sexy slightly punk vibe, resulting in some quality time if this tempts you already. “Kind of Guy,” talks of smoking women and the desire to make them feel good inside, raving with all the intensity of a train moving steadily to its destination, while “Freak When I’m Dead,” mandates that the rings remain on the body for the burial.
With enough moxie to give you that extra bit of confidence and “je ne sais quoi,” to go out and be able to ignore the minions of backwards hats, while seeing in clear view the beauty hidden in the nightlife, comes Wrong Side of the Room from Sweden’s Kristoffer Ragnstam. This record carries some very playful melodies saturated with a smokey complexion of lo-fi vibe in full high quality stereo, completed by a theme of self-help therapy sung with a strained tongue finally getting the needed release. The album really gets going on the second track, “2008,” with an initial verse that brings to mind Crackers’s “Teen Angst,” though rest assured by the time you get to that stuttering start on the heavy hip sway of the chorus, Ragnstam has set his own pace. All that sets up a personal favorite, “Sorry For Being The Man of a 1000 Questions,” manifesting a seedy feel of murky city swagger becoming of Jim Carroll. The rest of the album unfolds with a fever of high times shagability and personal revelations, not the least of which, “I Heard About My Own Death On The Radio,” includes a smooth sounding refrain, in addition to musings on the pitfalls of autonomy.
Phoenix, Arizona’s Dear And The Headlights release their new album, Drunk Like Bible Times today on Equal Vision Records. Drunk Like Bible Times stands somewhere amidst a world of folk expression, soaring “indie rock,” and other momentum building theatrics, perhaps best exemplified by standout “Try,” which features all of the aforementioned elements. Furthermore, the album is carried by vibrant guitar work that sparkles and shines, lighting up the way for this diverse work of ups and downs, galvanized by the immediacy of Ian Metzger vocals.
