Parenthetical Girls are celebrating the release of Entanglements, their first album for Tomlab, by asking some of their friends to cover and remix some of the songs from the album. The first two ventures came from labelmates No Kids and The Dead Science, who covered “This Regrettable End” and “Young Eucharists.” Now Deerhoof have covered the song “Gut Symmetries” in a sense, although they kept Zac Pennington’s original vocals intact.

Athens, Georgia’s musical history will soon be a little richer this fall when Orange Twin releases Vic Chesnutt’s collaboration with Elf Power, entitled Dark Developments. The album was recorded over the course of a winter by Vic and Derek Almstead in Chesnutt’s own attic studio.
The Walrus, the Skunk, the Lynx, and the Nightingale return today with the third album as The Sound Of Animals Fighting, entitled, The Ocean and the Sun. No doubt, this enticing collective has made some of the most vibrant and interesting sonic work this decade. Where Lover, The Lord Has Left Us has a strong machination thread with a wide cross section of emotions and moods (I love how “The Heretic” comes out of nowhere on that record, though making perfect sense by the end); and Tiger & the Duke has a jet engine bombast with equaled immediacy; The Ocean and the Sun is reflective and voyeuristic, standing post-anger, while still full of release and intensity. The album is saturated with atmosphere, unraveling as a journey much like its’ predecessors, while also presenting us with segways constructed to join, rather than purposely obscure. “I, the Swan” runs as the sister epic to “Skullflower” (Lover, The Lord Has Left Us), with both competing as my favorite TSOAF songs, and in no small part as a result of the Skunk’s heroic androgynous howl. Considering the amount of times I’ve listened to this album, I must say I rather enjoy it. However, I’m not ready to say where it stands amongst the Lover, The Lord Has Left Us and Tiger & The Duke. Finally, The Ocean and the Sun also exhibits ample frantic movements, intricate riffs, time shifts, and other aural oddities, though one should anticipate that the last half of this album gains more commonalities with Rx Bandits.
The Donkeys sophomore album, Living On The Other Side, comes out today via Dead Oceans. The album is a trip right out of late sixties/early seventies southern California by way of the beach, the canyon, and the PCH. The mood sets in with an equal sonic varnish implying the influence of hanging out, smoking, drinking, and other elixirs that promote 4th dimensional philosophical discourse. Living On The Other Side is fun, finely constructed, and carries well to the end, while not at all coming across as a redo of the past, rather a continuation of a pre-existing vibe that still has much life to breath. Opening with talk of leaving on “Gone Gone Gone,” the album shows imagination through a variety of classic feels, including the Neil Youngish “Dolphin Center,” and the groovy late night come down of “Traverse Wine,” with its’ smokey organ flow. The infection intensifies on the sing-along earthy atmosphere of the twangy “Bye Bye Bye,” while reaching a fever pitch on “Downtown Jenny,” which evokes thoughts of Jerry Garcia’s wonderful fragile vocals and the Dead tune “Deal.” The surf is up on the breezy “Nice Train,” with talk of hipster bars and drinking, though the eastern strain of the Byrds dominates “Dreamin’.” “Boot On The Seat” sees the return of the J. Garcia vocals, good harmonies, the pedal steel, and a nice harmonica. Living On The Other Side closes with the heavier “Excelsior,” falling somewhere in the midst of later long hair era Byrds and Gran Funk Railroad’s “I’m Your Captain.” Good show.

Out today is Damien Jurado’s newest album, Caught In The Trees, courteous of Secretly Canadian. Caught In The Trees explores new thoughts and territory for Damien Jurado, with music which feels more open, a bit thicker, and at times more appealing than ever before. The album opens with the playful acoustic folk pop of “Gillian Was A Horse,” filled out with the same fragrant feminine harmonies featured throughout this work. While the opener reminds me of something in the vein of Ben Lee and Ben Kweller, “Trials” immediately separates from the fold, taking in a solitary vision and the feeling that a cold storm is about to pass one way or another. While no complete departure, this is indeed a new season done in lighter shade with maintained poignancy and exhibited best on “Sorry Is For You,” a mid-tempo choppy acoustic colored number conjuring up an infectious riot of mood. At its most beautiful, comes the wanting and wondering of “Last Rights,” complete with light efficient harmonies that do much to bring out visions of falling snow, frozen lakes, and fading snow angels. After more listens than I can count, this one is easily my favorite album in the Damien Jurado catalog. Caught In The Trees features Damien’s closest mates, Eric Fisher and Jenna Conrad, along with the added nuances of Kory Kruckenberg and Casey Foubert.
