Manchester Orchestra:: Let My Pride Be What’s Left Behind

Manchester Orchestra:: Let My Pride Be Whats Left BehindCanvasback Music/Favorite Gentlemen Recordings has announced the release of a new EP/DVD from Manchester Orchestra entitled Let My Pride Be What’s Left Behind, available via independent retail only (see thinkindie.com for a list of participating stores) on October 14th. This EP/DVD combo will feature the never before released What’s Left Behind documentary film directed by Sam Erickson of 44 Pictures, three live tracks, and two brand new songs. The first track on the EP, “I Can Feel A Hot One” will be prominently featured in the September 15th episode of The CW’s “Gossip Girl”. The short-form documentary was filmed and edited by Erickson (My Morning Jacket’s Okonokos and Dave Matthews Live At Radio City) and explores the close bond between the band members on tour and highlights the constant themes of life, happiness, religion and death; threads that are echoed throughout the music and lyrics that make up the fabric of Manchester Orchestra. Starting this week at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN, the making of the sophomore album, officially titled Mean Everything To Nothing, gets underway with producer Joe Chicarelli (The Shins, My Morning Jacket and Manchester Orchestra).

Wilderness return with (k)no(w)hereWilderness return on November 4th (Nov. 3 in the UK) with (k)no(w)here, their third album. On the album, James Johnson is occasionally joined vocally by Colin McCann (aka The Lord Dog Bird), and as on previous albums, McCann performs on guitar, Brian Gossman on bass, and William Goode on drums. Check out a clip of Wilderness’ collaboration with Charles Long at the Whitney Biennial below.

Escape The Fate:: Breaking Buzznet with This War Is Ours

Escape The Fate:: Breaking Buzznet with This War Is OursThe promotion that asked fans to gather 50,000 people on Escape the Fate’s Buzznet page had such an overwhelming response in its final minutes, it managed to crash the big servers of the social networking giant that was hosting the promotion. While it may have only been for 15 minutes, that was a long 15 minutes to fans who had been parked on the page for more than a day, waiting to hear a new song from their favorite band. Launched on September 2nd, the digital social experiment challenged Escape the Fate’s core fans to cooperate with one another by gathering 50,000 people on the band’s Buzznet page. When that number was reached, it would “unlock” a long awaited, brand-new song from the band’s upcoming sophomore release This War Is Ours, out October 21 on Epitaph Records. Over the next 30 hours, determined fans posted bulletins on other social networking sites, made desperate pleas on YouTube and commandeered their parents’ and sibling’ computers and managed to gather their legions so quickly everyone was taken by surprise.

“I thought the promotion might run for a week or 10 days as word got out,” says Jason Fisher, Epitaph’s Director of New Media and the creator of the project. “I figured kids would log on after school and we’d see an increase every afternoon. I never expected them to unlock the song in a day and a half. Originally, I thought we could set the number of people at 25,000 and that would be a challenge.”

In the 30 hours the Escape the Fate promotion ran, it had nearly a million page views, generated 16,000+ comments and gathered well over 50,000 fans. The ensuing buzz caused the band to jump up the music charts on Myspace, landing them in the rarified Top 20. “The Flood,” the first single from Escape the Fate’s forthcoming This War Is Ours, can be heard here.

Bob Dylan: One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below)

One of my favorite all time Dylan tunes, though I love more than many from our great oracle.

Nana Mouskouri:: Black Coffee

Although I tend toward the cappuccino for early sustenance, often times, the milk only ruins the perfect flavor of the worshipping bean. Sometimes the best technique doesn’t make for the tastiest drink. It is all about the slide and the balance of proportioned spirit. I see it occasionally, and sometimes I’m even part of it, – - coffee, cigarettes, and good people making great conversation.

Program Reunites Ben Folds Five for One Off Concert

Program Reunites Ben Folds Five for One Off ConcertMySpace has announced the launch of its newest music program, “Front to Back,” celebrating iconic albums that have helped shape the MySpace Generation. MySpace kicks off this program by reuniting alt-pop band Ben Folds Five with an exclusive one-time live performance of their final studio album together, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, in its entirety. The concert will be the band’s first performance together in nearly ten years and will take place in the band’s former hometown of Chapel Hill, North Carolina on September 18, 2008 at the UNC Memorial Hall. The show will be rebroadcast on the “Front to Back” official MySpace profile in October.

We are honored and excited that Ben Folds Five is helping launch this new music program,” said Josh Brooks, VP of Music Marketing for MySpace. “‘Front to Back’ is about connecting and re-connecting the MySpace community, fans and bands alike with some of the most acclaimed and inspirational albums ever produced.”

“Front to Back” asks leading artists to perform one of their own seminal albums, from front to back, in a live concert that is then later aired on the site. The airing of the event includes interviews with the band as well as artists who were influenced by the album. Presented by Nowwhat.com, tickets to the Ben Folds Five “Front to Back” taping will go on sale to the public through etix.com on September 8th at 10 AM EST. Additional “Front to Back” performances will be announced by MySpace in the coming months.

Piano-based rock trio Ben Folds Five formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1993. Comprised of Ben Folds on vocals and piano, Robert Sledge on bass and backing vocals and Darren Jessee on drums and backing vocals, the group quickly became heroes in the world of indie alternative-pop. The band, well-known for their hit single “Brick” from their platinum-selling 1997 album Whatever and Ever Amen, was together seven years before disbanding amicably in 2000, at which time Ben Folds began his esteemed solo career while Darren Jessee went on to form the band Hotel Lights and Robert Sledge went on to play in the now defunct International Orange. Folds’ third solo studio album, Way to Normal, releases on September 30, 2008. The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner was released in April 1999 and was the fourth and final album from Ben Folds Five. It cracked the Top 40 of Billboard’s Album chart and reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Internet Albums chart.

“When MySpace approached me about doing this gig,” Ben Folds said, “I misunderstood and thought they wanted us to play Purple Rain front to back, so of course I said yes. But we’re happy to do The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner instead. Of our three albums, this one brings back the most vivid memories. It was actually written to be one song of many movements, which is why there are motifs that appear throughout the album. That should make Reinhold a natural to be played front to back.”

The proceeds from concert will benefit Operation Smile: Changing Lives One Smile at a Time. For more information, please go to operationsmile.org.
