Notes:: New Beach Boys Release From Al, Mike, Bruce and Brian…

Notes:: New Beach Boys Release From Al, Mike, Bruce and Brian...Okay, well not actually a “new” new release from The Beach Boys- but it’s yet another compilation from Capitol Records (are they milking it or what?) – it is however compiled by the group – Al Jardine, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and Brian Wilson. Hopefully Capitol will get the band together for a new LP in the very near future.

Official Capitol Records Press Release:
THE WARMTH OF THE SUN in stores 5/15!!

THE BEACH BOYS PRESENT A NEW CAREER-SPANNING COLLECTION, THE WARMTH OF THE SUN,TO BE RELEASED MAY 15 ON CD AND DIGITALLY BY CAPITOL/EMI
Compiled By The Beach Boys, New Compilation’s 28 Tracks Complement 2004′s Double Platinum The Very Best Of The Beach Boys: Sounds Of SummerHollywood, California – March 7, 2007 – The Beach Boys and Capitol/EMI Music Catalog Marketing are proud to announce the May 15 release of The Warmth Of The Sun, a new collection of 28 career-spanning tracks, hand-selected and sequenced by The Beach Boys themselves. The Warmth Of The Sun traces the iconic band’s creative arc in a sunup to sundown musical journey that goes beyond the beach, presenting a broad view of the rich musical legacy of America’s band.

The perfect complement and companion to 2004′s double-platinum certified Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys, this new collection delves deeper into The Beach Boys’ musical legacy with hits like “Sail On, Sailor” “The Little Girl I Once Knew” and “Feel Flows.” Within The Warmth Of The Sun’s three decade-spanning tracklist, much of The Beach Boys’ most accomplished work is illuminated. Compiled and sequenced by The Beach Boys’ Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, Mike Love, and Brian Wilson, The Warmth Of The Sun showcases the broad scope of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ recorded canon.
From the beauty and depth of the title track to the melody and groove of “Break Away,” the journey moves from the surf to the streets, each story narrated with The Beach Boys’ unparalleled trademark harmonies. With its full spectrum of themes and ambiance, The Warmth Of The Sun is a must-have collection for any fan of The Beach Boys’ musical mythos.
For four decades, The Beach Boys, originally comprised of the three Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and Hawthorne, California neighbor Al Jardine, have recorded and performed the music that has become the world’s favorite soundtrack to summer. In 1965, Bruce Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and winners of NARAS’ Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, The Beach Boys are an American institution that is iconic around the world.
In 1961, The Beach Boys began singing about America’s newest craze, surfing. What followed was a wave of hits that vividly expressed the lifestyles, dreams and ambitions of America’s youth. Their signature sound, full of sun-drenched harmonies, golden melodies and descriptive lyrics, delivered a taste of the free and easy California lifestyle to listeners around the world. The music of The Beach Boys brings optimism and a beam of Southern California sun wherever it is played.
Last fall, Capitol/EMI Music Catalog Marketing celebrated the 40th anniversaries of The Beach Boys’ legendary 1966 album Pet Sounds and the band’s #1 smash hit single “Good Vibrations” with commemorative CD, deluxe CD/DVD and limited edition vinyl packages.
More than 100 domestic and international publications and journalists have selected Pet Sounds as one of the greatest albums ever recorded. In 1995, MOJO magazine assembled a panel of leading musicians, songwriters and producers and named Pet Sounds “The Greatest Album Ever Made,” and in 1997, the U.K. music magazine voted “Good Vibrations” “The Greatest Single of All Time.” Pet Sounds was ranked second on Rolling Stone magazine’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list (2003), right behind The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Rolling Stone has also awarded Pet Sounds its highest five-star “Classic” rating, and in 2004, the magazine rated “Good Vibrations” sixth in its list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” The song has also been inducted into NARAS’ Grammy Hall of Fame.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH will celebrate The Beach Boys’ enduring legacy this year with “Catch a Wave: The Beach Boys, the Early Years,” a new exhibit scheduled to run from June 22 to December 31, 2007. More than any other artistic entity, The Beach Boys created an iconic vision of California as the Promised Land for those who would revel in youth, surf, sand, and rock and roll. This exhibit explores their formative years through never-before seen artifacts and tells the story of the band’s enduring legacy.

Notes :: 40 years on The Velvet Underground Back In NYC

Notes :: 40 years on The Velvet Underground Back In NYC The Velvet Underground are by far one of the most influential bands in modern popular music -their music, style and image were ahead of its time. To Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the debut LP “The Velvet Underground And Nico” make it a point to check out the new VU exhibit happening right now in New York City at: John McWhinnie @ Glenn Horowitz Bookseller April 12 to May 12 – it’s titled “C/O The Velvet Underground”
From the John C McWhinnie official site:

John McWhinnie @ Glenn Horowitz Bookseller is pleased to announce an exhibition commemorating the 40th anniversary of the release of The Velvet Underground and Nico. The album, perhaps the most famous debut by any band in the history of rock and roll, continues to resonate today with collectors, indie-rockers, aficionados, critics and the culture at large. Its enormous presence, however, has yet to be fully examined in an exhibition. This show attempts to correct that oversight, offering the most comprehensive collection of Velvet Underground memorabilia and artifacts to be seen in New York City. The exhibition tells the story of the album and the Velvet Underground through the historical artifacts of the period. Drawn from public and private collections, it includes rare printed work – posters, books, silk-screens, ads, reviews, and ephemera – as well as albums and photographs. The exhibit reveals the many styles of cultural promotion and engagement that served the Velvets, from their first gigs in New Jersey as a fledgling band to their celebrated collaboration with Andy Warhol. It charts the evolution from garage band to proto-punk, a movement that began with the release of their seminal first album. Rare posters in the show, including a signed poster from the 1966 performance in Provincetown, show how much Warhol influenced their early look. Later graphics show the band grappling with their identity, fusing a detached east coast cool with a slight nod to the psychedelia of the period. The show also reveals how their identities wandered over the latter part of the decade. Broadsides and announcements by other graphic designers, trippy to the point of high hippie, reveal how little control over their image they ultimately had. The look, a fascinating hybrid of art, design and musical cool, will be on display at the gallery.
Never before published or publicly shown photographs of the band by Adam Ritchie, Paul Morrisey and Doug Yule will be exhibited. The accompanying catalogue, C/O The Velvet Underground New York N.Y., features texts by Richard Prince, William Gibson, Jack Womack, Jonathan Richman, Jon Savage, John McWhinnie and Johan Kugelberg. There will be both a limited and deluxe version of the catalogue, each containing original photographs and silkscreen posters.

Notes:: Ryan Adams will not play Stonehenge

Notes:: Ryan Adams will not play Stonehenge Ryan Adams will not be playing at Stonehenge during the Salisbury International Arts Festival on June 5th. The show was canceled because of “unprecedented and unforseen” demand for tickets according to the Ryan Adams archive site. This is a shame. I don’t think anything this momentous had been attempted since the Grateful Dead played at the Giza plateau in front of the great pyramid. Ryan’s new record Easy Tiger comes out June 5th on Lost Highway records.

Film:: You’re Gonna Miss Me-Roky Erickson

Film:: Youre Gonna Miss Me Roky Erickson The Roky Erickson documentary You’re gonna miss me comes out on June 8th. Although, not really such a secret anymore, his band the 13th floor elevators made some of the greatest psychedelic records during the sixties. They had one top 40 hit you’re gonna miss me, and they performed it on American Bandstand in 1966. Roky has had a truly strange life, but has made some unforgettable music. Stranger even is that the Elevators label International Artists was run by Kenny Rogers brother Leland.

Notes:: I Couldn’t Make This Shit Up If I Tried

Notes:: I Couldnt Make This Shit Up If I TriedMaybe i’m just out of touch, but I was totally taken aback when I spotted these Joy Division shoes on the net. Perhaps it was common knowledge that these were coming out and I’m just out of the shoe loop, which I am. New Balance has come up with some Joy Division tennis shoes which have soles with the design from the Unknown Pleasures album. Frankly, I don’t know how I feel about this. I admit I found it disturbing enough when Urban Outfitters started making shirts with the Unknown Pleasures print, but I sucked it up. The question I really want to ask is ….why?

Tour News:: Wedding Present-George Best 20th

Tour News:: Wedding Present George Best 20thThe Wedding Present is set to do a twentieth anniversary George Best Tour. For the British leg they are planning to stop in all of the towns they played during the original 1987 tour. In addition they will play the album in its entirety. I probably won’t be able to make it over to the isles for any of these shows, but I am envious of anyone who can. The Wedding Present are a long time favorite of mine, and I can attest that their records sound as fresh today as they did when they were first released.
