news::Grupo Fantasma on Austin City Limits

news::Grupo Fantasma on Austin City LimitsStill riding the momentum from their performances with Prince in London this past August, Grupo Fantasma received confirmation of November 17th, as the airdate for their appearance on Austin City Limits. The band’s relationship with Prince began last November with a two month Thursday night stint at his Las Vegas nightclub 3121 and a hip-shaking performance at his mega-celeb filled Golden Globes after party. Fantasma opened for Prince in front of 8,000 fans in Miami, Florida and served as his backup band at several high profile events including the CBS Superbowl Bash in South Beach, the ALMA Awards, and an exclusive private party in their hometown of Austin, TX.

news::Bear in Heaven rare show tonight

news::Bear in Heaven rare show tonightBear In Heaven’s Red Bloom Of The Boom is a psychedelic trough of shimmering guitars, fading sections that drip and congeal into colorful hallucinogenic bliss. Red Bloom in Boom is seven songs of way-out future rock, which may leave you out of your head for a while. Daydream-and-goosebump-inducing vocals that are somewhat remiscent of Destroyer’s Dan Bejar, glide over walls of melodious distortion, constructing songs that are decadent and grandiose. Bear in Heaven’s debut LP, Red Bloom of the Boom, has been pushed back ever so slightly until Nov. 6, 2007. The band will be playing a rare show tonight at Grasslands in Brooklyn.

album::Zookeeper:Becoming All Things

album::Zookeeper:Becoming All ThingsChris Simpson of Mineral and The Gloria Record fame, virtually disappeared in the midst of recording the fourth Gloria Record album. Now Simpson has been allowed the time to decompress and regroup, giving him the artistic center to pack into an Austin studio and record Becoming All Things - an album of impromptu songs with shaking tambourines, exuberant horns, honky-tonk keys, and, at alternating turns, lyrical depth and whimsy.

artist spotlight::The Dimes:The Silent Generation

artist spotlight::The Dimes:The Silent GenerationThe Dimes’ sunny day pop is born of the same Northwest, as The Decemberists, The Shins, Ben Gibbard, and even recent Austin to Portland transplants, Spoon. Known for unexpected outbreaks of foot stomping and hand clapping at their live shows, The Dimes boys’ first full-length The Silent Generation should do a lot to make The Dimes’ common knowledge. Most of the record draws its inspiration from a series of Depression-era newspapers that guitarist, Pierre Kaiser, found buried beneath the old floors of his 1908 Portland home. At first, the old papers were a novelty item and a good read for a history buff like singer-songwriter Johnny Clay, but then those stories seeped into the album through tunes like the slow burning “Battle of San Jacinto” and throughout The Silent Generation.

album review::Richard Hawley:Lady’s Bridge

album review::Richard Hawley:Ladys BridgeFor Richard Hawley, following up 2005′s Coles Corner was a tall order. When an artist makes a great album they have to live in the shadow of that piece of work, at least for a while. The other thing that happens is it pretty much throws objectivity out the window for most people, in terms of how that new work stacks up in the context of the old. Having said all that, Hawley and his majestic voice are back with Lady’s Bridge and while it may not be Coles Corner, I can’t imagine a Hawley fan who wouldn’t love this record. It seems that he really found himself on Coles Corner, and that Lady’s Bridge builds on much of the same, and in its’ own right comes off as a really good piece of work. As I sift through an album I have heard countless times at this point, I have my favorites, not the least of which is opener “Valentine,” with its’ magnificent build into orchestral delight. Hawley’s baritone croon even switches up the music on the rockabilly tinged “Serious,” and the rootsy “Serious.” Of course, the best song on the album may well be the dark and mysterious album closer “Sun Refused To Shine,” which offers a gloomy forcast for those who believe in something, simply because they want to believe. Apart from being an album that one can almost guarantee in the future will be pulled out right along with his master work, Lady’s Bridge should change the tone of any worthy room the moment it is put on. *

notes::Photon Band return to earth after 5 years

notes::Photon Band return to earth after 5 yearsOn the Photon Band’ first album in over five years, leader Art DiFuria (formerly of the Lilys) has abandoned the solitude of outer (and inner) space to come to terms with this world. Appropriately titled Back Down to Earth (Empryean), the new album features eight outside musicians, including N. E. Farnsworth III from Bardo Pond, Dmitri Coats of the Burning Brides.

While playing guitar for the Lilys in the late fall of 1993, Art Di Furia picked up his favorite astrology mag, Welcome to Planet Earth, and read about a “band of photonic matter” that will envelop the earth and change consciousness forever. It seemed to Art that this explained everything: music of all kinds had been filling his head lately. Sometimes, he’d hear a lyric or a melody. Sometimes he’d hear an entire song with full instrumentation. His dreams featured unreproducable sounds with corresponding colors, and visitations from Jimi Hendrix, Syd Barrett, John Coltrane, and Sun Ra. He had already begun filling tapes with these ideas. Now he began labelling them, “Photon Band.” Now, five full-length albums and a harvest of singles and comp tracks later, The Photon Band return to prosper hallucinogenic solitude.
