album review::Thurston Moore:Trees Outside The Academy

album review::Thurston Moore:Trees Outside The AcademyLast month, Thurston Moore released Trees Outside The Academy on Ecstatic Peace! The album is his first solo endeavor since 1995’s Psychic Hearts. The music is a stripped down affair recorded at J. Mascis’ home studio with Steve Shelly on drums, Samara Lubelski on violin, and Thurston handling the bass and acoustic guitars. Don’t let the inadequacies of Psychic Hearts cloud your judgement. Trees Outside The Academy is a much more cohesive effort, which incorporates some interesting guitar structures with an air of laid back suspense. You’ll likely be able to pull out this one years down the line and remember “Let love take over, the devil just ain’t that smart.”

album::Oh Astro:Champions of Wonder

album::Oh Astro:Champions of WonderThe Illegal Art label will release Champions of Wonder from Oh Astro on November 6, 2007. A sampler featuring tracks from upcoming label releases was recently made available for free download by Illegal Art in hi-resolution MP3 format. Also, notice Oh Astro track “Hello Fuji Boy” (from Champions of Wonder) which features a sample from Lionel Richie’s epic love song “Hello.” In true Illegal Art fashion, Jane Dowe and Hank Hofler’s first full-length as Oh Astro is comprised almost solely of sampled material.

artist spotlight::Your 33 Black Angels:Lonely Street

artist spotlight::Your 33 Black Angels:Lonely Street Your 33 Black Angels hail from NYC and have a record Lonely Street that was released earlier in the year. Although Lonely Street was released quietly, it has been gaining more and more attention and even received a review in Rolling Stone. Overall, just a lot of good music about bad habits – “cold merciless women, irresponsible philosophy and violence.” Check out Your 33 Black Angels on their myspace. I also found the songs below on a couple of other great sites.

book review::The Source:The Untold Story of Father Yod, Ya Ho Wa 13, and the Source Family by Isis Aquarian with Electricity Aquarian

book review::The Source:The Untold Story of Father Yod, Ya Ho Wa 13, and the Source Family by Isis Aquarian with Electricity AquarianWhen you think of the term cult it probably evokes horrific images of the Manson Family or Jim Jones & the People’s Temple. The term “cult” certainly has a negative connotation and in the nineties we saw the culmination of those reactions with the Janet Reno Branch Davidian disaster. Recently, I finished up The Source:The Untold Story of Father Yod, Ya Ho Wa 13 and the Source Family, and don’t remember the last time a book changed the way I looked at something, but this book has. Prior to reading I knew nothing about The Source, except some vague knowledge of their house band “Ya Ho Wa 13″ and their impossibly hard to find music.

The Source is the story of Jim Baker, aka Father Yod, aka Ya Ho Wa, and his family of “sons” and daughters which numbered around 150 and really lived it up in Los Angeles between 1970 and 1974. Throw out any notions of serious abuse and tales of brainwashing horror, because The Source family existed like no other you have probably heard about. Jim Baker, was among other things, a judo and archery expert who had a prosperous health food restaurant on the Sunset Strip that afforded him and his family a luxurious lifestyle. They lived in a Hollywood mansion, had their own recording studio, he drove a Rolls Royce and had a fleet of red and white VW buses, and Baker became “Father.” These were men and women “commited to life that centered around spirit and family, health, well-being, and the attainment of consciousness.”

The book follows their misadventures around Hollywood and elsewhere, and includes some great anecdotes. My favorite being the tale of Yod taking some of his family to a chic LA restaurant and bribing the maitre d to sit them in their fancy far out garb next to then governor Ronald Reagan. Throughout the book it is evident that Jim Baker was charismatic, intelligent, extremely savvy, and very generous. While family members did donate their belongings when they joined, it was Baker’s restaurant and ingenuity that financed the bulk of the family’s high style activities. There is one story after another of future family members meeting Father Yod for the first time and having a transcendent experience.

What is truly touching is how much to this day the experience has maintained its’ meaning for many of the family members. There are countless commentaries by members who describe their time with Ya Ho Wa as the pinnacle of their lives. One member even states that sixty percent of his present memories come from the one year he spent with the family. Having said all that, this book is not all cheery eyed adulation for the family. There are some detractors, but even most of the dissenting views still show appreciation for this special time. In finale, I have to say that this book was not only eye opening, but the first book in a long time that I was a sad to see done. Father Yod and his family are great characters who carved out a world of their own amidst the fabric of early seventies’ new age California.

dvd review::20 to Life:The Life and Times of John Sinclair

dvd review::20 to Life:The Life and Times of John Sinclair I recently took in 20 to Life: The Life and Times of John Sinclair, which comes out on MVDvisual at the end of the month. John Sinclair is a poet, revolutionary, band manager, activist and lover of rhythm and blues who arose up from the intense cultural climate of the sixties to become a hero and a legitimate political prisoner. 20 to Life tells Sinclair’s story through interviews with him and his friends, family, and cohorts from the past. Sinclair sought to destroy the status quo by a “total assault on the culture by any means necessary” through “a new music, new politics, and a new way of life.” Managed by Sinclair, the MC5 were the music, and as their popularity grew, he had a plan that the band would get huge and they would take all the money and buy radio stations to disseminate information to change the culture. The government was obviously concerned with the going ons of Sinclair and his growin influence, considering the amount of time the authorities spent hassling him. His ultimate goal was freedom and to challenge the “constitutionality of Michigan’s marijuana laws” (especially after have received an extremely harsh sentence for only two joints). Sinclair spent about two years in prison and was released within days of the John Sinclair Freedom Rally – where John Lennon & Yoko famously performed (perhaps the place where Lennon’s trouble with the U.S. government started).

20 to Life is an interesting look at Sinclair’s life, and the White Panther Party, Detroit Artist’s Workshop, and Translove Energies collectives which he organized. Indeed, this was a time when there was so much happening that anything seemed possible. John Sinclair appears all throughout the documentary, looking back at his exploits, and at one point even states that the blind idealism they displayed was only possible, because of all the LSD they took. The documentary is entertaining and gives an insightful glimpse into a time when real change seemed possible. The thing I found most reassuring is the way in which the present John Sinclair is positive and enjoying life, and hasn’t succumbed to the bitterness that often comes from the fall of idealism. In the end, Sinclair’s message is that “we have a right to our bad habits, and it ain’t nobody’s business what we do.” If you’re a fan of the sixties culture, then 20 to Life, will be right up your alley.

album::The Warlocks:Heavy Deavy Skull Lover

album::The Warlocks:Heavy Deavy Skull Lover The Warlocks have a new record Heavy Deavy Skull Lover coming out next week on Tee Pee Records. Coming off of 2005′s Surgery on Mute, The Warlocks found themselves back on the ground again. Now, they’ve created for us Heavy Deavy Skull Lover, an album of dark, murky passages, music that often feels like it is floating, and sometimes the record even has a shoegaze(albeit gloomy) feel. This one is more about the journey and definitely meant to be listened to as a whole. Rob Cervera who recorded the band’s first EP Rise and Fall, returned to the controls for this one. The Warlocks will be playing the Tee Pee CMJ showcse Friday night.
