Yesterday, the A-Sides released their second full length Silver Storms on Vagrant Records. The A-Sides three founding members Jon Barthmus, Mike Fleming, and Patrick Marsceill met while attending Drexel University, and with the additions of Charlie Cottone and Christopher Doyle, Silver Storms was produced by Brian McTear (Mazarin, Danielson, Espers). The album ranges from instrospective numbers like “My Heroes Have Always Been Crazy” to rockers like “We’re the Trees.” The album was recorded looking out of giant windows on the city of brotherly love as the days were getting longer and spring was turning into summer.

Magnet, aka Even Johansen, will be leaving the confines of his Norwegian farm for the wide expanse of the U.S. when he takes to the road with Montreal indie poppers Stars in late October, as well as a handful of his own shows. The tour is in support of the multi-instrumentalist’s third full-length, The Simple Life, out now on Filter US Recordings.
Largely a solo effort in the past, Johansen is now joined on stage with a 5-piece band, allowing his beautiful compositions to be fully brought to life. Recorded in his studio on the coast of Norway, Johansen played nearly every instrument on The Simple Life as well as handled production duties.
The Simple Life marks Magnet’s third full-length and was released earlier this year throughout Europe, including Norway, where it was the #1 album week of release. To celebrate the album’s arrival, Johansen played 40,000 feet on an airplane flying from Oslo to Reykjavik, breaking the world record for highest performance ever accomplished!

Eskimo Joe will release their new record Black Fingernails Red Wine on Rykodisc on September 25th. There’s something about the allure of a big city that can either captivate or corrupt the soul. For Australian rockers Eskimo Joe, New York holds the possibilities of both. Their song “New York” from Black Fingernails Red Wine is a haunting expression of the blinding lights of the big city.

MVD Entertainment Group has sealed a deal with CBGB to bring a series of live performance audio recordings from the club to consumers. Each CD will feature a full concert recorded at the club from the ‘80s through ‘00s. The initial offerings will come from Mooney Suzuki, the Queers, and H2O. More are expected to be announced in the fourth quarter of 2007, including some limited edition vinyl releases.
MVD is donating a portion of sales to the Hilly Kristal Foundation for Musicians and Artists . Hilly Kristal, the famed founder of CBGB, passed away on August 28, 2007 at the age of 75 due to complications from lung cancer. As a singer, songwriter, and musician, he ran CBGB for 33 years until it closed in 2006. He is credited with giving the Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, and Television their first gigs. His friendship and partnership with MVD throughout the years has been extremely cherished and will be missed greatly according to Ed Seaman, COO of MVD Entertainment Group. “It was always an honor to work with Hilly & CBGB, and I am especially touched that he entrusted MVD with this challenging new project,” said Seaman. “The artists in the series have been so cooperative and responsive because of their respect for CBGB and Hilly. It has been really refreshing. And the club’s personnel did a great job capturing, mixing and storing the audio masters over the years. We expect to have 10-15 single artist releases in the next year, and probably a handful of compilations.”

Division Day are giving us another exclusive new cover song or remix every Tuesday for 8 weeks to celebrate the release of Beartrap Island (iTunes: Sept 18, in stores Oct 2.) This week’s offering is a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy The Silence”, from their 1990 seminal album Violator. According to the band..
“this song became a regular band-van jam in the last year, due mostly to kevin’s long-lived love affair therewith- he claims an intense affinity with “silence” since early childhood. when the covers project idea started getting bounced around, this was sort of a shoe-in- a perfect pop song with an elegant melody, tantalizingly simple, but iconic enough to make the undertaking not a little foolishly hubristic. kevin wanted to playfully undermine the original’s electro leanings by building the song on a foundation of tube-overdriven acoustic guitar, and this became a great spring-board for increasingly organic textures. i wanted to make the song a kind of conversation between raveled anti-fidelity and unlikely grandeur.”

Dangerbird Records released Eulogies self-titled debut last week. I’m not saying these bands sound alike, but when I listen to the Eulogies album, the songs give me the same feeling I get when I throw on a Reigning Sound or old Grifters album. I guess the things they all have in common are that they are all strong guitar bands with fairly simple song structures that are both powerful and full of changes that draw you in. While I’m not sure what any of the songs are really about, while I’m listening they all seem to make perfect sense. What I do know is that on one of my favorite songs – Little Davie, Davie lied to get a job so he could get on top, and while he made the big time, he never got any relief. My favorite track is the opener Inward, which starts with syth humm, which cuts abruptly to just the electric and the vox briefly before the song just explodes and the bass and drums just pound a rhythm that makes you want to go conquer something. Speaking of bass and drums, Big Eyes is a departure from the guitars and more of a hypnotic piece that revolves around an effected guitar riff that comes in and out while the bass pulses. The album comes to completion under the auspices of one of the albums darker tracks – Blizzard Ape, which begins with the words “Eyes without a…,” which sends my mouth straight into Billy Idol’s “Eyes Without A Face,” which is where the Billy Idol and Eulogies’ comparisons begin and end.

Today Bella release their Mint records debut “No One Will Know.” Bella are known for their exciting live shows where audience members are often treated to spontaneous dance explosions. “No One Will Know” was recorded with the help of some of Bella’s friends like Roddy Bottum & Will Schwartz (Imperial Teen) and Jason Martin (Starflyer 59), while also joining forces with producer Dave Carswell of JC/DC Studios (Tegan & Sara, New Pornographers). “No One Will Know” lays it all down, and comes stacked with a lot of great hooks and some of the most exciting syth/guitar pop to come out in a while. There is enough diversity in the song writing on “No One Will Know,” to keep the listener engaged and entertained. The keys are utilized on some songs more than others, like Don’t Sleep Alone where the sythesizers at one point sound off a New Orderish interlude. Songs like Ocean or a Lakeshore brings the male vocals to the forefront on this straightforward guitar tune, whereas Settle Down is a female fronted minimilist piece. If pop is your thing, then look no further than Bella’s “No One Will Know,” which is certain to make you do the worm, or at least tap your feat.

Oslo will set out on tour this Fall in support of their new album THE RISE AND FALL OF LOVE AND HATE (Six Feet / Sidecho). Oslo, comprised of songwriting trio MATTIA BORRANI (lead vocals, guitars), KERRY WAYNE JAMES (bass) and GABRIAL McNAIR (guitars, backing vocals), as well as Damon Ramirez (keys) and Charlie Walker (drums/ percussion) has enjoyed much success independent of any label support. Their emotive and engaging live shows and self-titled, self-produced debut release (2005) garnered significant buzz and coverage from RollingStone, Billboard, Music Edge, LA Weekly and the Los Angeles Times, which named Oslo one of the top 10 bands to download in the Fall of 2006. “The Rise and Fall of Love and Hate” is available digitally on September 25 and will hit stores October 9, 2007.

Following an intimate appearance at Spiegeltent in late August, Jose Gonzalez celebrates the release the September 25th release of his latest effort, “In Our Nature”, by kicking off the first string of dates in his US Tour with three nights in New York. Newly updated dates through December may be found below. Gonzalez is also slated to make national television appearances on Late Night With Conan O’Brien (September, 28th), and Jimmy Kimmel Live (October, 11th).
“In Our Nature” sees González coming into his own as a songwriter – with songs that are as instantly accessible as they are brimming with darkness and brooding intensity. Gonzalez, like his music, is deceptively unassuming, studied and powerful. He attacks his craft patiently, methodically and with great interest in finding unexpected angles. While it is sonically similar to Veneer, “In Our Nature” shows Gonzalez’ growth. Displaying a heightened emphasis on melody and strong, focused lyrics – the album is a dark combination of softness and anger.

The members of Los Angeles-based trio Sunday Drivers literally traversed the globe before meeting each other. After traveling through the Middle East with a single pair of pants and a notepad, vocalist-guitarist Brady Erickson met bassist Marisa Dupuis. A few late-night songwriting sessions later, and the foundations of the band were in place. Once back in Los Angeles the two found the last piece of their puzzle in drummer Bryan Zaebst, a native Texan who had come to LA to attend art school. Together they created the Archetypes EP.
